"He went up a beekeeper and came down a hero"

Reviews

"You leave the theatre with pride and a sense of warmth"
 Whats on Stage

"A merrily inventive take on one of the most courageous achievements of the 20th century"
Liverpool Echo

"An original script, fluid direction and gripping performances ensure that the story itself is never overshadowed by Spike's desire to entertain. You walk away with the sense of extreme human endeavour intact but with an added understanding of what could drive any of us to such craziness"
Total Theatre

"A top-class visual treat "
Liverpool Daily Post

"The cast of three's adventurous re-enactment of Hillary and Tenzing's daring deed has a Boys own pinch of nostalgia and a desire to defeat the odds in an epic drama to match the 1953 ascent"
York Press

9/10 ‘Topping’
  Liverpool Echo

 4/5 ‘Up up and away…’
  Liverpool Daily Post
A comic fiction based on the true life events of the conquest of Everest toured for 33 performances at 29 venues in February and March 2010.

In 1953 beekeeper Edmund Hillary and porter Tenzing Norgay (along with a team of 278) began a gruelling and treacherous ascent to conquer the summit of the worlds highest mountain  Everest.
Taking inspiration from Hillary and Norgays biographies and the Oscar nominated documentary  'The Conquest of Everest'  Spike re-tell the story behind one of the greatest achievements of the 20th Century.

Incorporating projected animation and puppetry Spike spins its own brand of bold visual storytelling (and a load of big ladders) to bring to life an epic tale of adventure, bravery and international fame.

Devised and written by Mark Smith, Eugene Salleh, Chris Tomlinson and Jamie Wood.
Directed by Mark Smith
Designed by Kevin Pollard
Original Music and Lighting Design by Paul Skinner
Animation by Pieter Zwaagstra
Performed by Eugene Salleh, Chris Tomlinson and Jamie Wood
