The Sandman
(is coming in 2009!)
Morpheus, Ole-Luk-Oie, The Prince of Dreams, he has many different names in many different cultures, but Greta knew him simply as The Sandman.
A ‘handmade’ theatrical fantasy inspired by German Expressionism, E.T.A. Hoffmann’s chilling supernatural tale ‘Der Sandmann’, Freud’s work in child psychology ‘The Uncanny’ and other choice manifestations of the Soporific Spectre in literature. The result is a theatrically rich, intelligent and visually stunning folk tale for adults.
The Sandman is a darkly comic and surprisingly shocking tale, ultimately concerned with love, loss and guilt. it also explores parental fears surrounding a child's inner life and asks “what is really behind the impulse to create myths for our children?”
The show contains many of Spike’s trademarks: a compendium of bold physical storytelling techniques, carefully crafted narrative, a live musical score, integrated set design, animation and puppetry.
